Our Summer of Landmark Victories!
NCLR has been on a tear the past several weeks. Each week, we’ve reported a great new success—our win for high school student Dynasty Young in Indiana, our federal court victory in Pennsylvania for surviving same-sex spouse Jennifer Tobits, our historic partnership with the Department of Justice on behalf of a transgender student in Arcadia, CA, and this week the signing of historic legislation protecting transgender students in California. Make no mistake: your support made each of these victories possible.
Yesterday, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the historic School Success and Opportunity Act—Assembly Bill 1266—legislation sponsored by NCLR and others, ensuring that transgender youth have the opportunity to fully participate and succeed in schools across the state.
AB 1266—which goes into effect on January 1, 2014—is the first law of its kind in the country. It requires California public schools to respect students’ gender identity and makes sure that all students have equal access to all school activities, sports teams, programs, and facilities.
Thanks to your support, we had the resources necessary to do the legal analysis, legislative work, and public education that resulted in this victory. I hope you will give a gift today in celebration of this victory. Your gift will support our efforts to pass similar laws across the nation! We will not stop until all students in every state are protected and celebrated for being themselves, without being limited and harmed by outdated gender stereotypes.
This victory caps a summer of landmark moments. But let’s not stop! A gift from you today will help us build on these victories and ensure every LGBT person in this country can live fully and freely.
